Where Are Your Feet?
Apr 07, 2025
I know—it’s a strange question. But in times of global uncertainty, it might just be the most important one to ask yourself.
When the world feels like it’s spinning out—markets fluctuating, businesses struggling, personal lives filled with unknowns—it’s easy to spiral into catastrophic thinking. You’re not alone if your mind races to worst-case scenarios:
Is my business going to fail? Will my savings disappear? What’s next?
Here’s a simple grounding practice I’ve shared with many students and clients over the years. It helps bring us back from the edge of fear and into the present moment:
Ask yourself: “Where are my feet?”
One of my students, who struggled with driving due to a chronic health condition, recently told me:
“I got in the car, put my feet on the ground by the pedals, and said, ‘Where are my feet?’ The answer was: on the ground. I can do this.”
A friend going through the emotional rollercoaster of IVF shared:
“When the uncertainty felt too much, I’d ask: ‘Where are my feet?’
Right here. In this moment. I’m okay right now. And right now is all I need to manage.”
Even in the chaos of parenting—two kids talking at me while I try to meet a deadline—I return to that same question:
Where are my feet?
They’re right here. With my kids. This is what matters in this moment.
This practice isn’t just about your feet.
It’s about coming back to now.
To what is real, tangible, and manageable.
So the next time you feel overwhelmed by the weight of an uncertain future, pause.
Take a breath.
Ask yourself: Where are my feet?
And let the answer bring you back home—to yourself.
